Tween Scene @ NCPL!

You've been asking for it. No really. Well, somebody's been asking for it.

The week of October 8th through the 11th, the Nelson County Public Library will be debuting all-new tween programming, for ages 9-12. Monday will be our usual "Hollywood Monday", Tuesday will be a hands-on crafty project (we're thinking stuff made from bottle caps and bolts), Wednesday is a pirate party (Arrr.) and Thursday is a special tween only game night.

Programs for the Tween Scene run from 3:30-5:30, and will be held in the community room. Fliers and tickets for Hollywood Monday can be picked up at the front desk.

So the new library is open, and now is the time you've all been waiting for:

THE RETURN OF GAME NIGHT!

So here it is folks. Every Thursday, from 6-8, we will be hosting game night in the community room. That's the big room when you walk in the front door and turn to the right. As always, bring your gear and we'll provide the snacks.

Also, Anime night will be held on the second Tuesday of every month, starting with May 8th. Bring a friend!

Want to help us move?

As you all know, we're just counting down the days until we can move into our brand new library just down the street. I proposed that we could move the YA section ourselves, and the Powers That Be thought that was a great idea. So what I need from you is this: I need six volunteers, who are available to help us move the YA books from here to the new building next Friday, March 16th. We would do it right after school, so we'd need everybody here around 3:30 so we can get started!

Help us build our Anime DVD collection!

I'm currently coming up with an anime DVD wishlist for the new library. I've started a list of some of the classics, as well as a few of my favorites and some that have been requested by you all. I'm looking for boxed sets, because paying $20 for each disk is silly when they'll come out in a set for $35 later. (I know that Cowboy Bebop is on the list individually, but I'm not sure Bandai will ever release a Bebop box set.) Also, I'm looking for stuff that doesn't air on television all the time. I know that knocks out some of our favorites, but lets face it, if you want to watch those you can just turn on Cartoon Network. So with those conditions in mind, take a look at my list here, and give me some more ideas! You can leave them in comments here, or email them to me at emthelibrarian@gmail.com.

(You get an extra gold star if you can suggest titles appropriate for younger children that don't air on TV all the time... ;) )

Like Audiobooks? Looking for something new, and maybe even unpublished? Podiobooks is a site that offers free audiobook downloads of unpublished books in all genres. There's even a few that were written specifically for the YA crowd, so go take a look!

Also very cool is Librivox, which offers free audiobook downloads of books in the public domain. (Hint: Many of the books assigned in your English classes are in the public domain. Read the book, then download the audio!)

Halloween!

If you're looking for something to do this Halloween, never fear! Come down to the library basement on Tuesday, October 31st, where we'll be having a teen Haloween party from 6-8. There's going to be snacks and plenty to do, including movies and games. I'm even pulling my Ouija board and tarot cards out of the closet. :) So come join us, and bring your friends!

(Costumes are encouraged, but if you insist on not dressing up you can still come down and have fun.)

Just a reminder, we will be having a meeting to discuss our ideas for Banned Books Week this Thursday, Sept 21st. The library is closing at 5PM that day due to staff being gone at a conference, so we'll need to have the meeting around 4PM. This is different from what we had originally planned, so pass on the new info. (And as always there is no game night on the 3rd Thursday of the month.)

Banned Books Week

This is the Banned Books week brainstorming post. At the Zoo Board meeting, we discussed the idea of writing essays/letters about banning books, as members of the "Literary Protection Agency". What we need is ideas about books that could be banned, and why. There will be another meeting next Thursday (Sept. 21), where we will compile these ideas into something we can use for banned books week.

We know it's late notice, but we'd like to try and have a Zoo Advisory Board Meeting this Thursday before game night. Most of you show up early anyway, so we'll just do some planning stuff with whoever is there around 5. If you can't make it, don't worry, there's always next month!

For this year's summer reading program, we are once again hosting a murder mystery party! This one is entitled "The Immortal Murders", taking place at a gathering of Weres, Vampires, Fae, Mages, and mortal watchers. If you know someone who doesn't have an email address but still wants to participate, never fear! They can sign up at the desk, or at the first summer reading meeting.

You can help us fill in our manga collection!

As many of you know, we're missing a great deal of our manga collection due to theft (if the book has been lost and paid for, we reorder). How can you help? Well, we're talking about possibly putting the duplicate volumes we've got up for trade. In exchange for a volume we're missing (it doesn't have to be our copy, just a copy of the manga*) we'll give you one of our extra volumes. If you're interested, come talk to either Carol or myself.
